Shillong, Feb 14: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister, Marcuise Marak has filed a FIR against a social media post for spreading rumors, that he has been assassinated.

In the complaint filed with the East Garo Hills, Superintendent of Police, Marak stated that the circulation of such a post is a serious attempt to spread panic, incite unrest, and also pose a grave threat to public order and security.

“It is a direct attempt to mislead the public and create unnecessary fear,” the Cabinet Minister stated in his FIR to the police.

Marak requested an immediate and thorough investigation into this matter and appropriate legal action against those responsible for spreading this misinformation.

“Such false reporting must be dealt with strictly to prevent further attempts at public deception,” Marak stated in his FIR.

On February 13, 2025, the social media page “The Garo Hills Times”, falsely claimed that the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) had taken responsibility for his assassination.

Meanwhile, the NPP has strongly condemned the spread of fake news on social media claiming that the Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and local MLA of Williamnagar, was assassinated by the militant group GNLA.

Benedict Sangma, NPP’s District President, expressed deep concern over the misleading information, questioning the motives behind its spread and urging the police to investigate and bring those responsible to justice.

The NPP warned that such baseless rumors could have serious consequences, disrupting peace and stability. They called on the public to verify information before sharing it on social media. Authorities are expected to take necessary action against those spreading falsehoods.
