Shillong, Oct 10: Two students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) were injured after masked miscreants entered their hostel room and attacked them with rods on Wednesday night.
The attack came few hours after the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) NEHU unit was formed and its office bearers were elected, and at the time when an election to elect new office bearers of the North Eastern Hill University Students Union (NEHUSU) is being postponed by the university’s Election Commission, though the voting was scheduled on October 3. No date has been fixed for the election.
One of the injured students is member of the HYC, while another injured student belongs to the Adult and Continuing Education department.
An FIR has been lodged with the Mawlai police station.
Following the incident, a delegation of the HYC met Superintendent of Police (city), S A Rynjah and sought his intervention into the incident.
After the meeting, HYC Shillong City general secretary, Enlang Sawian said the incident took place few hours after the HYC NEHU unit was formed and elected its office bearers.
Around 10 masked people with rods in their hands entered the Kupli Boy’s Hostel and warned the security guard from interfering.
“As soon as they entered room number 18, they straight away asked about the HYC member. When our member responded, they beat him mercilessly and threatened him with dire consequences if he continues to be the HYC member,†Sawian said.
Condemning the incident, Sawian termed it a cowardly act while warning against such elements.
The SP (City) has assured the HYC delegation to seriously look into the matter.
Police are investigating into the incident, and CCTV footages of the hostel have been seized.
Meanwhile the HYC NEHU Unit and NEHUSU leaders also met the Vice Chancellor, Prof SK Srivastava who assured to take extra steps to enhance deployment of security personnel for the safety and security of students inside the university’s campus.
The Vice Chancellor also assured that the University will lodge a complaint against the miscreants who entering the campus and the hostel forcefully to attack the students.
