Nongpoh, September 22, 2025: Concerned over the rising incidents of crime and the increasing number of drug users and peddlers in the state, the Dorbar Shnong Mawkhar on Monday organised an Awareness Programme aimed at addressing drug abuse and other social evils in the community.
The programme, held at the Community Hall, brought together youth, parents, and schoolchildren to discuss the harmful effects of drugs and substance abuse. A special focus was placed on educating parents to be more vigilant about their children, especially those in their teenage years, as they are most vulnerable to peer pressure and addiction.
The event began with a rally through the streets of Mawkhar, starting from the Community Hall and passing through YMCA, Motphran, GS Road, Dreamland, Ri Khasi Press, and Mawkhar Main Road before concluding back at the Community Hall.
Key speakers included Bah Ransom Sutnga, Rangbah Shnong of Mawkhar; Kong Eudora Warjri, Adviser of VHAM; Bah Barry L. Kharmalki, General Secretary of Meghalaya Users Forum; and Tbn Dr. B.L. Nongum. Leaders from the Seng Kynthei Mawkhar Welfare Organisation and other resource persons also participated in the programme.
The Dorbar Shnong expressed its hope that such initiatives will create greater awareness and encourage collective responsibility to keep the locality free from drugs and related crimes.
