Shillong, Apr 19: The Meghalaya government on Thursday said that it would take up with the Centre for making the land custom station (LCS) at Balat functional.

The LCS is located at Balat along the Indo-Bangladesh border in East Khasi Hills district.

Replying in Assembly to a query raised by Congress MLA, HM Shangpliang, Home Minister James K Sangma informed that the 10th bilateral meeting between India and Bangladesh held in New Delhi has agreed to examine the re-opening of Balat LCS.

He said that a one week back, the district industries centre of Meghalaya has sent a team to examine the proposal and the report has been submitted in this regard.

James also informed that the report has been forwarded to the Government of India for taking necessary action based on the report sent by the state government.

“We will take it up with the Central government so that it also takes up the matter with the Bangladesh government,” James said.

To another query by Shangpliang, the Home Minister said that the Balat LCS has been non-functional because the amount of trade was not there, and exporters also did not show interest in using the LCS.

Shangpliang urged the state government to also consider renaming the Balat LCS to Dangar LCS since the land custom station geographically is located at Dangar village.

James however assured that the matter would be taken up with the Government of India as naming of the land custom station is being done by the Centre.
