MCS officer arrested in petrol bomb attack case, Court remands to seven days police custody

Shillong, July 26: Police have arrested a Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) officer in connection with the recent petrol bomb attack in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) office.

On Thursday, a court remanded the accused officer, Grandwill Harly Passah in police custody for seven days.

Passah surrendered at Lumdiengjri police station on Wednesday night. Later police of Sadar Police Station arrested him.

Passah was place under suspension from service since 2015 when he was the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Jirang Community and Rural Development Block in Ri-Bhoi district.

On July 10, miscreants lobbed a petrol bomb inside the office chamber of MPSC Secretary, W.A. B. Booth. Some important documents, computers and others materials were damaged.

An FIR was filed by the MPSC secretary and case of arson was registered at Sadar Police Station.

Police have already arrested four persons including two persons who were paid for carrying out the petrol bomb attack.

East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police, Davis N.R. Marak said that preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested MCS officer was involved in paying money to some people for the petrol bomb attack.

Police revealed that one of the four arrested persons had also warned the other accused persons that if they reveal anything, they may face dire consequences.

Police said that one of the arrested accused was paid Rs 50,000, but he paid Rs 18,000 each to two other persons to carry out the petrol bomb attack.

The SP said the motive behind the petrol bomb attack at the MPSC secretary’s room will be known only after interrogating the MCS officer (the main accused).

Police found that the arrested person who warned the other accused persons not to reveal anything is the driver of a vehicle which belonged to the sister of the accused MCS officer.

“We also found that another arrested person who had paid money (Rs 18,000 each) to the other two people to carry out the petrol bomb attack was working in the house of the MCS officer. This accused person has confessed that the attack was carried out based on the order given by the MCS officer (Passah),” Marak added.
