Shillong, Apr 6: The NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government on Thursday maintained that it has no intention to proceed ahead with the issue related to mining of uranium in the state.
This was expressed by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma before a delegation of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) during a meeting here.
“The chief minister has assured that his government has no intention to proceed with the issue of uranium mining,†KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar told reporters after the meeting.
He said that Union in the past has been spearheading numerous agitations since 1990s against the move of Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL) to mine the radioactive mineral in areas around Mawthabah – Kylleng Pyndensohiong – Nongbah Jynrin villages.
“We have urged the CM to put a stop on the proposed project once and for all so as to ensure that the people of the state can live in dignity with no fear of environmental degradation, health hazards and influx of migrants arising from uranium mining,†he said.
On the long pending inter-state boundary dispute with Assam, Marngar said the Union has demanded the state government not to be so soft in its approach but to ensure that its counterpart in Assam also respects the status quo as being respected by Meghalaya.
It also asked the government to chalk out a foolproof strategy to ensure places such as Langpih, Raid Nongtung, Elaka Nongphyllut, Pyrdiwah that rightfully belongs to Meghalaya, are reclaimed with full authority.
To ensure transparency in the job recruitment process, the KSU has also suggested the need to do away with the personal interview and if not, video recording of the personal interview should be made mandatory.
Urging the government to speed up putting in place the education policy, the Union also proposed setting up of government college in every district of the state.
“We have also urged the government to facilitate the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India at the earliest,†Marngar said while informing that CM had assured that the matter will be taken up with the Centre very soon.
