MDA’s sub-committee announces Dr Kharlukhi as unanimous candidate for RS election

Shillong Mar 04: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has named former professor, Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi as its candidate for the upcoming election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat.

The election will be held on March 26.

The name of Kharlukhi was unanimously recommended by the sub-committee of the MDA chaired by Deputy Chief minister, Prestone Tynsong.

Kharlukhi is currently the president of the NPP Meghalaya unit.

Earlier, John F Kharshiing who left the Congress prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, had offered himself to chief minister, Conrad K Sangma urging that his name be considered the MDA’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha poll.

When asked about the other aspirants who wanted to be the MDA candidate for the Rajya election, Tynsong did not want to reveal their names saying, “when the sub-committee has unanimously recommended the name of Kharlukhi, it is not necessary to discuss about other names now.”

Though the common candidate of the MDA, Kharlukhi, will however stand the election on the symbol of the NPP.

The voting to elect the new Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya will be held on March 26 from 9 am to 4pm. Counting of votes on the same day at 5 pm.
