Shillong, October 10: The Muaythai Association of Meghalaya has announced that two young athletes from the state — Alphonsa Zinia (16) and Andy Taro (17) — will represent Meghalaya at the 3rd Asian Olympic Youth Games to be held in Bahrain from October 22 to 30, 2025.
The announcement was made by U Bah Angelus Sun, President of the Muaythai Association of Meghalaya, during a press conference at the Shillong Press Club.
Expressing pride and delight, U Bah Angelus said Meghalaya is honored to have its youth athletes competing on an international platform, showcasing the state’s sporting potential and dedication.
Both athletes and officials shared their gratitude for the support extended by the state government and various sports organizations, which ensured smooth preparations and participation.
Andy Taro, from Ri-Bhoi District, highlighted his earlier achievements, including his participation in the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates in 2022, where Meghalaya athletes won five medals, bringing recognition to both the state and the country.
On government assistance, U Bah Angelus noted that the state had provided 50% funding for events like the World Championship in Malaysia, along with additional support for training and preparation. The Meghalaya government also offers scholarships for medal winners — ₹8,000 for gold, ₹7,000 for silver, and ₹6,000 for bronze — as an incentive to encourage young athletes to excel and bring honor to the state.
He further shared that the association has already begun preparations for the 39th National Games in 2027, which will be hosted in Meghalaya. The government and sports authorities are coordinating efforts to ensure that Meghalaya’s athletes are well-equipped and competitive at the national level, continuing to bring prestige and pride to both the state and the nation.
