SHILLONG, MAR 23: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday announced that the statewide verification of SSA and adhoc teachers is currently underway, paving the way for implementation of a revised salary structure from April 1, 2026.

“The step for verification… is going on all over the state,” Rymbui told reporters, adding that districts such as West Garo Hills have set up dedicated centres to ensure the process continues smoothly despite recent law-and-order challenges.

While final figures are yet to be compiled, the minister expressed confidence that the verification exercise will be completed within two weeks. “The government is committed that the new pay structure will be implemented from April 1, 2026,” he said.

Addressing concerns over the financial implications, Rymbui described the increased expenditure as a necessary investment in the education sector. “When we try to give the best to the students, we have to invest,” he stated.

He estimated the additional financial outlay at ₹220–250 crore, which would raise the total annual expenditure on teachers’ salaries to approximately ₹850 crore. The final amount, however, will depend on the verified number of teachers and their categorisation under different experience slabs.

Rymbui explained that the revised pay structure will be linked to years of service. “We will know the exact number after verification because… those who have started service, the salary is this much, after five years it is this much, after ten years this much, after twenty years this much,” he said.

Emphasising the broader objective, the minister said the initiative should be viewed as an investment in improving the quality of education. He also urged teachers to remain committed to their responsibilities and called on school managing committees to ensure accountability in addressing duty lapses.

Expressing optimism, Rymbui added that better remuneration would encourage greater dedication among educators. “Teachers when they get less salary work hard and now… they will do more,” he said.
