Shillong, June 13, 2025: In a major step toward sustainable land use and economic diversification, the Meghalaya Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has approved the repurposing of 273.41 acres of land owned by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) for tourism development.
The announcement was made by Cabinet Minister and Government Spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh following a Cabinet meeting held today. As per the decision, the Power Department, through MeECL, will transfer the identified land to the Department of Tourism under a revenue-sharing model, aimed at unlocking the tourism potential of underutilized government land while enhancing the operational efficiency of the Power Department.
“This strategic repurposing aligns with the government’s broader vision of sustainable development and public asset optimization,” said Lyngdoh. “It will not only generate revenue but also boost tourism infrastructure in key areas.”
Identified Land Parcels for Transfer:
The existing IB campus at Lum Jingshai
Areas stretching from Lay Junction along the Ri Shatsngi Road to Nongsder Village, including the Umiam Police Station and Mawlyndep
Land behind the MeECL School
Land behind the HRDC premises extending to the NESSAK Block 5 area
The move is expected to catalyze eco-tourism and public-private partnerships in tourism infrastructure, contributing to job creation and local economic development while ensuring optimal use of state-owned resources.
This decision reflects the Meghalaya government’s evolving approach to integrated planning, where departments collaborate to align development goals with environmental and economic sustainability.
