Shillong, July 10, 2025: In a landmark move to promote film tourism and position Meghalaya as a premier filming destination, the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, has approved the Meghalaya Film Policy 2025. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who emphasized that the policy’s formulation was shaped by extensive consultations with filmmakers, particularly local producers.

The new policy seeks to transform Meghalaya into a major hub for both national and international film productions by offering financial incentives and creating dedicated infrastructure. A Film Facilitation Cell will be established, comprising officials from the Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Information & Public Relations (IPR) departments to streamline approvals and coordination.

Key highlights of the Meghalaya Film Policy 2025 include:

Subsidies up to ₹1 crore or 25% of production cost for national and international films that shoot at least 75% of their scenes in Meghalaya and showcase the state’s natural and cultural beauty.

Support of up to ₹50 lakh for local language films, applicable once every two years to encourage regional cinema.

Grants for TV serials, original web shows, documentaries, and short films filmed in Meghalaya.

Plans to develop a full-fledged film studio and promote digital content through Meghalaya’s own government-funded OTT platform, the first of its kind in India.

“This is a major step toward promoting film tourism and showcasing Meghalaya to the world,” said Minister Lyngdoh. “It reflects our commitment to harnessing the creative economy and giving our talented filmmakers the support they deserve.”

The policy is expected to attract filmmakers from across the globe while nurturing local talent and preserving Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage through cinema.
