Meghalaya Cabinet satisfied with preparations for National Games

Shillong, Oct 10: The Meghalaya government said that it was determined to complete all required sports infrastructure within four years for hosting the National Games in 2022.

The government made this commitment after discussing the preparations of the state for hosting the national games in 2022 in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma.

During the meeting, the sports department gave a presentation about the preparations for the National Games and a fund of Rs 300 crore being funded by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for creating stadiums at the New Shillong Township.

Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the Cabinet found that the preparations were satisfactory.

He said that about 50 acres would be utilised for creating stadiums at the New Shillong Township and another 70 acres would be utilized for building the Games village.  

For building the Games village, the state government has to manage its own resources, Tynsong informed.

He also informed that the sports department would complete the process of engaging consultant, architect, and chief executive officer of the National Games by November 15.

On the delay to complete big projects in Meghalaya, as the state got only four years to build big infrastructure, Tynsong said, “the state government is determined to complete all required infrastructure within 2022.”

The host city contract for hosting the 39th national games in 2022 was signed by the State government on January 3, this year. In 2022, Meghalaya will also celebrate 50 years of statehood.Meghalaya is the third state in the North East to host the National Games in 2022. Manipur had hosted the National Games in 1999, and Assam hosted in 2007.
