Meghalaya celebrate’s National Voters’ Day

Shillong, Jan 25: Along with the rest of the country, National Voters’ Day was also celebrated in Meghalaya.

In the state capital, Shillong the celebration was held at Ward’s Lake which was attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Hector Marwein as the Chief Guest.

Addressing the inaugural session of the day-long celebrations, Marwein said, “we are privileged to be a part of the largest democracy in the world but this democracy becomes meaningless unless the people actively participate in the election process without fear or favour or any other considerations.”

He said that the State Election department has been working tirelessly to ensure that every eligible person participates in the elections and urged the electorates to exercise their franchise wisely and ethically.

He particularly urged the youth and first time voters of the state to be wise, cautious and informed while voting, as their vote will decide their future.

Earlier, the Chief Guest also launched the 1950 VVIP (Voter verification & Implementation Programme) Helpline through which electorates can confirm and verify their names and other details.

Prizes to winners of various competitions and for the RUN FOR DEMOCRACY organised earlier in the morning were also distributed.

Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) were also distributed to the first time voters. Photography competition, Zumba fitness, and a Rock concert were other highlights of the celebrations.

Also present were Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills and District Election officer, M War Nongbri, Additional CEO, R P Marak and other officials.
