SHILLONG, Jan 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday assured that the Meghalaya government is moving aggressively to complete the remaining fencing along the international border with Bangladesh, while noting that the Government of India is also closely monitoring the progress.
Speaking to media persons, Sangma said sustained efforts are underway to resolve pending issues. “We are moving very aggressively on that and I hope that things should be completed soon,” he stated.
The chief minister informed that around 40 km of the total 440-km Meghalaya–Bangladesh border fencing remains incomplete due to challenges such as population-related concerns, land acquisition issues and ongoing court cases.
“We are taking necessary steps. I expect that very soon, because some of the stretches are facing court cases, especially the West Jaintia Hills section, which is the largest portion left unfenced,” Sangma said.
Emphasizing the state’s heightened vigilance along the international border, the CM said all agencies are on high alert. “The government of Meghalaya, the BSF and all agencies are very alert,” he asserted.
Sangma also revealed that a high-level review meeting was held on December 24, 2025, involving multiple agencies including the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB), to assess and strengthen border security measures.
