Shillong, Aug 1: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said that he was personally monitoring the situation in the state after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published in Assam.
“I have spoken to the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police and asked them to stay alert. They also submitted reports on a daily basis,†Conrad told reporters on the sideline of a programme here.
According to the Chief Minister, districts like East Jaiñtia Hills, Ri-Bhoi, North Garo Hills, West Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills are considered to be “very vulnerable.â€
He informed that check points in different locations of the state have been set up to ensure that no suspected illegal immigrants enter into the state.
On the setting up of “infiltration check gates†by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on National Highways in East Jaiñtia Hills, West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts, the Chief Minister said, it is not appropriate for non-government organizations to involve in the process.
The KSU said that around 1500 persons who did not posses valid documents were detected in the three districts and sent them back to Assam as they were suspected to be illegal migrants.
