Shillong, Nov 28: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said he was saddened to hear the news of Jaswant Singh Gill, a mining expert and award-winning rescuer.
Singh (80) passed away on November 26 in Amritsar after suffering a cardiac arrest.
“Saddened by the news of the demise of Jaswant Singh Gill ji who became a global icon for his bravery in saving 65 trapped miners at “Raniganj,” Sangma tweeted.
“We are indebted to his efforts in aiding the rescue operations to save the trapped miners in Meghalaya. May his soul rest in peace,” the Chief Minister added.

Singh had visited Meghalaya last year and provided his technical expertise to rescue the 16 miners who were trapped inside 370-feet-coal pit at Khloo Ryngksan in East Jaintia Hills district on December 13, 2018.
Of the 16 trapped miners, the Indian Navy pulled out two dead bodies from the coal pit.
In fact, Singh had lamented on the lack of coordination between the Meghalaya government and central government agencies to rescue the trapped miners.
