Shillong, Sept 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday warned private universities that “are not doing good job” while stating that higher and technical education is one of the important aspects in the proposed education policy of the state.
Addressing students and academicians at the fourth convocation University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), one of the private universities in the state, the Chief Minister said, the state government would come up with a robust education policy and the Cabinet had sat and discussed about the draft.
” I hope within this month, we will be able to release the education policy and it will be a great milestone for our government,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said that the education policy would stress on quality of higher and technical education.
“I am very saddened to see that there are a number of private universities in our state and I can tell you, most of them are not doing good job. If we are going to take firm action, we will ensure that this do not happen in future. Only serious people and serious players who want to give back and work for education sector and only those institutes and organizations should be brought in and give the right to start the education centre,” the Chief Minister said.
He said that one of the aspects in the education policy is to ensure that institutions which will come up in future should be institutes with good intentions and good quality attach to it.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister urged the youth not to be scared to take risk, and youngsters must not only be job seekers but also job creators.
“I always believe that the government should be limited as only a policy making and a catalyst and allow the entreprenuers to grow. The economy can only grow if young people go into entrepreneurship. You go to any developed countries it is the entreprenuers who drive the growth engine of the country. It is never the government,” he said.
