Shillong, Sept 30: President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday appointed full time Governor for Meghalaya and four other states and a Union territory.
The other states where new Governors have been appointed include, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Bihar and the Union territory, Andaman and Nicobar islands.
Former member of the Bihar Legislative Council, Ganga Prasad, will take charge as the new Governor of Meghalaya.
Meghalaya did not have a full-fledged Governor after the removal of former Governor, V. Shanmuganathan from office on January 26 this year.
Shanmuganathan was facing sexual harassment charges where a section of employees of the Raj Bhavan accused him of “seriously compromising” the dignity of the gubernatorial office.
Earlier, Assam Governor, Banwarilal Purohit held additional charge as Governor of Meghalaya.
Purohit however has been appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu in the place of Maharashtra Governor, C. Vidyasagar Rao, who was also taking additional charge of Tamil Nadu.
In Purohit’s place, the President has appointed former Delhi BJP MLA, Jagdish Mukhi as the Governor of Assam.
BJP leader Satya Pal Malik, was also appointed as the new Governor of Bihar, the state where Kovind was the Governor before he became President.
Retired Brigadier and war veteran, B.D. Mishra was appointed Governor of Arunachal Pradesh that shares international borders with Bhutan in the West, Myanmar in the East, and China in the North.
Earlier, Nagaland Governor, Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya was holding additional charge of Arunachal Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the President has appointed former Navy chief, Admiral (retired), Devendra Kumar Joshi as the new Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar islands.
