Shillong, Sept 25: A young girl from Meghalaya, who went missing from Assam under mysterious circumstances and subsequently trafficked for more than seven months, has been rescued from Khalpara, Siliguri in West Bengal.
The victim was rescued jointly by Assam and Meghalaya police on September 22, and re-united with her parents who had accompanied the police team, after more than seven months of her disappearance.
On February 21 this year, an FIR was filed by the mother of the victim, Jemina Rymbai on her daughter’s disappearance at Dispur police station in Assam. She also filed a missing report at Lumdiengjri Police station here February 26 this year.
The 24-year old victim, a resident of Jowai in West Jaiñtia Hills district, who was working as nursing intern at the GNRC and hospital in Guwahati and stayed as a paying guest in the Super Market area about 50 metres from the hospital, went missing on February 2, without anybody having any information on her whereabouts.
Superintendent of Police (City), Vivek Syiem today said that the Missing Squad of East Khasi Hills district police vigorously pursued the case, notwithstanding the fact that the girl went missing from Guwahati.
“Through its intervention, the Missing Squad apprehended one Nur Muhammad of Sonatary village under Tarabari police station, Barpeta with the assistance of Boko police station and was found involved in the disappearance of the missing girl. It was also gathered that he was the last person to have met her and was in possession of some of her belongings and admitted to have abandoned her at Hajo after crossing Saraighat bridge,” Syiem said.
According to Syiem, following Nur Muhammad’s apprehension, Guwahati city police registered a regular case vide Basistha PS Case No. 260(04)2017 u/s 366/376 IPC and arrested the accused, but the investigation could not make further progress.
“The Missing Desk East Khasi Hills continued to pursue the matter and gathered information that she (girl) had been trafficked to West Bengal. The Missing Squad and the Anti Human Trafficking Unit, East Khasi Hills followed up the matter and after receiving information that she was somewhere trafficked to Siliguri, left for the above destination along with a team of the Assam Police on September 22,” he said.
The joint team, Syiem said, through their efforts could rescue the girl from Khalpara, Siliguri in West Bengal, who was kept under confinement.
“Her captors however managed to give a slip when the raid was conducted in the area. Investigation is still on to identify the traffickers and the circumstances of her being kidnapped,” Syiem added. (EoM)
