Shillong Jun 2: The Meghalaya government is seeking reports from all concerned departments including the urban affairs and revenue departments about the present status of the matter related to rehabilitation of residents of Them ïew Mawlong (Sweeper’s Lane).
During a meeting chaired by Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma in the secretariat here on Saturday, the issue was discussed while also discussing the prevailing law and order situation in Shillong city.
Home minister, James K Sangma, Health minister, A.L. Hek, Tourism minister, Metbah Lyngdoh, and Sports minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh, along with North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum attended the meeting. Headmen from localities of Mawkhar, Jaïaw, Wahingdoh, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Jaiaw Pdeng, and Mission Compound who were also accompanied by senior citizens of the localities to the meeting.
During the meeting both the government and the delegation shared common concern on the ongoing law and order situation in the city.
The headmen spoke at length about the hardships faced by the local and genuine residents of the area and requested the government to immediately withdraw police force from entering localities and firing tear gas inside people’s compound.
On this, the Home minister informed that police have been exercising maximum restraint and would continue to do so.
He also informed that one person directly involved in the assault of the bus driver and three others at Them ïew Mawlong had been arrested on Friday, and he is currently under police custody for further investigations.
On curfew timings, the headmen suggested proper announcement so that the public are given proper awareness.
On the point related to removal and rehabilitation of inhabitants at Them ïew Mawlong (Sweeper’s Lane), the Chief Minister informed the delegation that he had sought for reports from all concerned departments like urban affairs and revenue department about the present status of the case regarding rehabilitation, and after going through the reports, the government would take necessary steps.
The headmen assured to extend full cooperation to the government to bring back normalcy and the chief minister thanked the delegation for taking the initiative to bring back peace and normalcy in the city and the state.
The government also appealed to the public to maintain calm ad lend their support in doing so for the larger interest of the people of the state.
