SHILLONG, MAR 27: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday said the Meghalaya government is making substantial investments in the education sector, spending nearly ₹1,200 crore annually to support over 4,500 institutions through ad hoc and deficit grants.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of College Week 2026 and the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Synod College held at the Students’ Field, Jaiaw, Sangma stated that around ₹120 crore is allocated each year towards teachers’ salaries under the deficit grant system, with Synod College among the beneficiaries.

He assured continued government support, noting that Meghalaya stands out among Northeastern states for its sustained commitment to a large number of educational institutions.

Lauding the legacy of Synod College, the Chief Minister said the institution has grown from humble beginnings to become a centre of excellence, shaping generations of youth with strong values. He added that its alumni, including the late J. D. Rymbai, reflect the college’s impact beyond academics.

Recalling his personal association with the institution, Sangma emphasised the importance of investing in human capital. “Education remains the most powerful tool to transform society and take the state forward,” he said.

Highlighting ongoing reforms, he referred to the recommendations of the Education Reforms Commission and appreciated the contributions of its members in strengthening the sector.

Addressing students, the Chief Minister pointed out that nearly 50 per cent of Meghalaya’s population is below the age of 20, representing about 18 lakh young people. He described this as both an opportunity and a challenge, urging youth to channel their potential constructively.

He also expressed concern over rising issues such as drug abuse and HIV, calling for collective efforts from institutions, student bodies, and society to address these challenges.

Encouraging a shift towards self-reliance, Sangma urged students to embrace entrepreneurship. “Every year, around 60,000 youth enter the workforce, but only 1,000 to 2,000 government jobs are available. The answer lies in entrepreneurship,” he said, adding that the government is ready to support skill development and innovation initiatives.

Concluding his address, he urged students to uphold strong values, stressing humility, kindness, and respect for others.

Earlier, Principal G. Lyngdoh highlighted the institution’s journey since its establishment in 1965 with just 43 students. Today, the college has grown to over 3,000 students across multiple academic streams and has secured an A+ grade in its latest NAAC accreditation cycle.

She also informed that the college is working towards establishing an extended campus at Mawpdang in the New Shillong Township, focusing on skill-based and livelihood training programmes.

The programme featured cultural performances, release of the college souvenir, and announcement of College Week winners. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and marked the culmination of College Week 2026, themed “Grace, Growth and Gratitude,” alongside the celebration of 60 years of the institution’s contribution to education.
