Shillong, July 17: A group of young boys and girls from different parts of the state recently won gold, silver and bronze medals at the just concluded 3rd North East Kickboxing Championship 2018.
Organized by the Kickboxing Association of Bodoland Territorial Council, the championship was held at Kokrojhar in Assam from July 12 to 15.
The team representing the state comprised of 15 players from the All Meghalaya Kickboxing Association (AMKA) which includes 9 males and 6 females.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, AMKA president Samuel Hashah said, “It is a proud moment for the state as all the 15 players could manage to win 1 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze medals at the recently held kickboxing championship.â€
Stating that despite of not getting any support from the state government, he said yet, the players from the state so far were able to win in many competitions whether at the national or regional level.
The AMKA president further informed that the players from the state would also participate in the upcoming national kickboxing championship to be held in Goa from September 6 to 9.
“Actually the national championship was supposed to be held in Shillong but due to the recent violent protest, it was later decided to be held in Goa. However, we will ensure that next year, it will be held in our state, which will be for the first time,†he said.
From among the 15 players, Shaiborlang Lyngdoh from Nongrah Dongktieh and a student of Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Higher Secondary School bagged the gold medal in the light contact junior boys in the 54 kg category while Johny Ryntathiang from the Special Force-10 won the silver medal in the low-kick senior men below 57 kg category.
Meanwhile, the youngest player in the team, 11-year-old Elliberal Lyngdoh from Domkseh village in West Khasi Hills District and a student of Mont Hermon Higher Secondary School also won bronze medal in the sub-junior below 47 kg category.
