Shillong, 6 June 2025: On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly held a Tree Plantation Programme at the New Assembly Complex in Mawdiangdiang. The event, attended by top state leaders including Speaker Thomas A Sangma and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, showcased Meghalaya’s strong environmental commitment.

He highlighted the success of the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiative, with ₹42 crore already distributed to protect 52,000 hectares.

He also launched ‘Mission Clean Shillong 2027’, a sanitation and beautification initiative ahead of the National Games, and stressed the need for similar urban interventions in Tura and Jowai.
Speaker Thomas A Sangma emphasized ecological values embedded in the new Assembly’s design and urged a statewide clean movement inspired by Mawlynnong. Forest Chief R.S. Gill praised Meghalaya’s community-led conservation legacy, from sacred groves to living root bridges, and highlighted improved support for forest staff.
The programme concluded with a symbolic tree plantation by all dignitaries, affirming Meghalaya’s unified resolve for a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future.
