Shillong, October 2, 2025 – The Government of Meghalaya observed Gandhi Jayanti on Thursday with a solemn ceremony at the Rilang Building (Main Secretariat) in Shillong to mark the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Senior officials, staff, and dignitaries gathered to pay floral tributes to the Father of the Nation.
The programme was led by Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, Chief Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, who laid a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi as a mark of respect. The event was attended by senior government officials, including Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari, Commissioner and Secretary; Shri Vijay Kumar Mantri, Commissioner and Secretary, Information and Public Relations Department; Shri Swapnil Tembe, Secretary, Education Department; and Smt. R.M. Kurbah, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, among others.
The ceremony, held in an atmosphere of dignity and reflection, saw dignitaries and employees from various departments taking turns to offer floral tributes, reaffirming their commitment to Gandhi’s principles of peace, non-violence, and service to humanity.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed underscored the enduring relevance of Gandhi’s ideals, particularly his emphasis on truth, simplicity, and unity. He urged officials to uphold these values in public service and personal life, noting that Gandhi’s vision continues to provide moral guidance in contemporary times.
