Shillong, June 21: As Meghalaya commemorates Thomas Jones Day, the state pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Reverend Thomas Jones — a Welsh missionary whose contributions have left a lasting imprint on the cultural and educational fabric of the region.

Revered as the “Father of the Khasi Alphabet,” Rev. Jones is credited with developing the Khasi writing system using the Roman script — a linguistic foundation still in use today. His efforts not only preserved the Khasi language but also played a vital role in standardising the Sohra dialect as the common tongue across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

This year’s observance also marks the 12th anniversary of the introduction of lower primary schools in the United Khasi and Jaintia Hills — a significant step forward in realising Jones’s vision for accessible education.

Though often overlooked in broader historical accounts, Thomas Jones remains a pivotal figure in the cultural and ecclesiastical history of the Khasi people. In recognition of his monumental contributions, the Meghalaya government in 2018 officially designated June 22 — the date of his arrival in Sohra — as Thomas Jones Day.

Rev. Jones passed away on September 16, 1849, at the age of 39. He is buried at the Scottish Church Cemetery in Calcutta, where his grave stands as a silent witness to his remarkable legacy.
