Shillong, Oct 15: Police on Monday said that a video being spread through social media about the recovery of the body of a British citizen who drowned in Umngi river was false.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis N.R. Marak said that the video circulated in social media was the body of a person from Mawlong in Shella area who drowned in a river in the area in September and was recovered on October 3.
“The body that was recovered was not of the British citizen (Elizabeth Hume),†Marak clarified.
He said that Hume had drowned while kayaking in Umngi river in November 2015, but the recent incident that occurred was in Shella area.
It may be mentioned that Hume went missing while kayaking in Umngi river near Kenbah village Phlangwanbroi under Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills on November 5, 2015.
Her body was yet to be recovered till date.
In March 2016, the family of Hume including her father Charles, mother Ruth, sister Jessica and brother Christopher, had organized farewell ceremony to her after the body was not recovered even after four months.
The ceremony was also attended by the people of surrounding villages which include elders as well as the Syiem of Hima Malai-Sohmat, Rangbah Shnong of the two villages of Phlangwanbroi and Kenbah.
