Shillong, July 15, 2025: The Meghalaya Government has announced a new safety measure that will require all commercial vehicles to display the driver’s name, license number, contact details, and address in a visible format.
The initiative, announced by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, aims to improve passenger safety, especially for women and solo travelers.
“This step is meant to deter crimes and build trust. Passengers will be able to identify and share driver details with family members, ensuring safer journeys,” Lyngdoh stated during a press briefing in Shillong.
The rule applies to all permitted commercial vehicles, such as taxis and tourist vehicles, but excludes private vehicles, government cars, and state-run transport units.
A one-month grace period will be given once the official notification is issued. After that, non-compliant vehicles will not be allowed to operate commercially.
In its first phase, the policy will focus on four-wheeled commercial vehicles, with two-wheelers to be included later based on feasibility.
“This is a global best practice. By implementing it here, Meghalaya joins other cities and states in prioritizing commuter safety,” added Lyngdoh.
