Meghalaya’s Cyber Crime Wing uses new software instruments to monitor offensive posts

Shillong, July 2: New software instruments have been used by the Cyber Crime Wing in Meghalaya to monitor offensive and inflammatory posts on social media, while two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in making offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks.

Police have already arrested two persons, Manbhalang Nongspung and Fuller Strong Kharsyiemlieh.

The Cyber Crime Wing has started taking legal action as per provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and Indian Penal Code in various cases.

So far, 11 cases have been registered for offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks on social media and a number of persons have been questioned and their mobile phones were seized which gave evidence about inciting materials which they had posted or forwarded.

Police observed that the role of social media with respect to the disturbances in Shillong had drawn the attention of all members of the society.

The Meghalaya police have taken the help of various Central government agencies and departments as well as from a technological institute in Delhi to enhance the capabilities of the Cyber Crime Wing in the state.

CID Special Superintendent of Police, R. Muthu said that social media platforms like Google, Facebook etc have positively responded to the request of the cyber crime wing to give information about persons who have been putting inciting materials on social media and proper legal instruments are being used to obtain such information.

The state police appealed to all citizens to cooperate with the department and its cyber crime wing so that no unscrupulous elements can take advantage and create fake news and incite passions.

Social media users are also advised not to post or propagate any unsubstantiated news or reports and that it would be prudent to check all these things with the local police.

Similarly, the police also advised the administrators of social media groups to ensure that no offensive materials are posted by any members of the group which can invite legal action.
