Shillong, Apr 7: The Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has approved the transfer of 278 footballers between district associations for the 2026 season, reflecting continued high activity in the state’s domestic football circuit.

While the number marks a decline from 329 transfers recorded in 2025, it remains significantly higher than the 122 transfers seen in 2024, indicating sustained momentum in player movement across districts.

The transfer window officially closed on March 31.

Among the district bodies, teams affiliated with the Shillong Sports Association led the activity by signing 80 players from other districts. This was followed by the Thadlaskein Sports Association with 56 transfers and the East Jaintia Hills District Football Association, which registered 42 new signings.

The transfers come as clubs look to strengthen their squads ahead of their respective district leagues for the 2026 season. The timing is also crucial with the upcoming 5th edition of the Meghalaya State League, organised by the MFA, which is set to kick off later this month featuring the top-ranked clubs from across the state.

MFA General Secretary Sunesh Syiem, while releasing the list of approved transfers, reiterated the association’s regulations, emphasizing that no player is permitted to represent more than one district sports association within a single calendar year.

“Please note that if any player is found to violate these guidelines, both the player as well as the district association will face action by the MFA as deemed fit,” Syiem stated.
