Shillong June 17: Meghalaya Farmers Welfare Commission (MFWC) chairman, K.N. Kumar has encouraged farmers to take up mushroom cultivation, and organic farming in the state.
Kumar who attended a discussion with farmers from six villages in and around Laitdiengsai area under Mawkynrew Block at Laitdiengsai village recently, also urged the farmers to reduce using chemical fertilizers while encouraging them to embark on natural farming.
The programme was organized by Fr. Bernad Laloo of the Social Service Center, Shillong Archdiocese, as a part of the FARM & REC Project.
After the discussion in the presence of leaders of the Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU), the farmers adopted a resolution to go for organic farming and agreed to attend the training programme on mushroom cultivation which will begin on June 20.
Kumar also enlightened the farmers about the benefits of organic farming, and agricultural produces free from Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides are on high demand, not only locally, but nationally and globally.
Leaders of the Hill Farmers’ Union extended support for making this transition successful.
