SHILLONG, MAR 23: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recommended compensation of ₹10 lakh for the children of a pregnant woman who died at Jowai MCH Hospital, concluding that medical negligence contributed to the incident in 2025.
The Commission took suo motu cognizance of the case following a newspaper report published on June 6, 2025, which highlighted allegations made by the victim’s family from Jalaphet village in East Jaintia Hills district.
According to a statement issued by MHRC secretary L Ch Marak on Monday, an enquiry committee constituted by the Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Department on July 7, 2025 found “a number of deficiencies relating to the death of the patient.”
Based on the findings, the Commission passed its final order on March 23, 2026, addressing the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department.
“The Commission has passed the final order… with a recommendation for payment of compensation of ₹10 lakh to be paid to the children of the deceased in order to improve their living conditions as they have lost their mother,” the statement said.
The recommendation underscores accountability concerns in public healthcare delivery and calls for corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
