SHILLONG, JAN 6: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed submission of a detailed inquiry report within a month’s time into the death of two people due to alleged dynamite explosion at Thangsko village.
A statement issued by the MHRC secretary L Ch Marak on Tuesday said, “The MHRC has taken suo motu cognizance pertaining to the unfortunate death of 2 people at Thangsko village in East Jaintia Hills district…after alleged dynamite blast in EJH coal mine.”
“The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, to cause an effective enquiry and to submit a detailed inquiry report to the Commission in one month’s time,” it added.
One Ashok Tamang is the only person whose death has been confirmed so far. He succumbed to his injuries on January 1, 2026, while undergoing treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital.
Sources further informed that Tamang was initially taken to Sutnga Primary Health Centre on December 23, before being referred to Shillong Civil Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
The identity of the second victim is yet to be ascertained.
