Shillong, Nov 26: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of an incident involving alleged medical negligence at Civil Hospital, Shillong, where two injured students were reportedly left unattended after a road accident near North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
According to a report published in The Shillong Times on November 24, one of the injured students was allegedly left bleeding for almost an hour before being shifted to Nazareth Hospital for further treatment. Family members and fellow students have accused the hospital staff of negligence and failure to provide timely medical support.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the MHRC has issued a notice to the Director of Health Services (MI), Government of Meghalaya, directing an immediate and thorough inquiry into the matter. The Commission has sought a detailed report on the incident on or before January 7, 2026.
The MHRC stated that the alleged delay in attending to the critically injured victim raises grave concerns regarding the handling of emergency cases and the protection of the fundamental right to life and healthcare.
