Mishap kills one, injures 12 including 4 months old baby on Nongstoiñ-Shillong road

Shillong, Mar 28: One person was killed and 12 others including four months old baby were injured when a vehicle ferrying them overturned on National Highway 44(E) Nongstoiñ-Shillong road on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Darius Kharmaw (27) of Synïa Mawdoh village in West Khasi Hills district.
The accident occurred at around 9.45 am when a Sumo bearing the registration number ML05-J-9327 driven by Reinborlang Shianglong (18) of Synia Mawdoh overturned at Nongshillong on the National Highway.
The vehicle was coming from Synia Mawdoh and proceeding to Mawriangtynnai village.
The driver fled away from the spot.


The injured were taken immediately to Markasa PHC and Mairang CHC.
However one of the injured persons passed away on the way to Civil Hospital Shillong.
Police are investigating into the matter.
Recently, Congress MLA from Umroi, George B. Lyngdoh had raised in Assembly the issue related to accidents on national highway and urged the government to set up critical care units on different highways in order to attend to accident cases that required immediate attention in order to save people’s life.
The Umroi MLA said that setting up of such critical care units on highways would be of great help to injured persons as they can get immediate treatment since at present, injured persons have to be taken to Shillong or other towns where civil hospitals are located for treatment.
