Nongpoh, Dec 3: In order to review the ongoing construction progress of the 20 km Nongpoh–Umden road and ensure quality implementation, Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem today conducted an inspection visit along the stretch, accompanied by officials from the PWD (Roads) Department.
During the inspection, the MLA observed significant progress, with modern machinery enabling faster and improved construction quality. Despite minor challenges due to heavy vehicular movement in the area, engineers and workers informed that they are currently able to lay approximately 2 km of blacktopping per day. The first 10 km has already been completed in terms of sub-base and base work, and blacktopping is now underway. The remaining stretch is awaiting final completion of drain and culvert construction, after which blacktopping will begin.
Officials assured that the ongoing phase is targeted for completion by the end of December or early January, while Phase II, connecting Umden up to Byrnihat, is scheduled to commence soon.
The MLA expressed optimism that the project would be delivered on schedule and appreciated the close supervision extended by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who holds the PWD portfolio. He urged local residents to continue supporting the work to ensure smooth progress.
Residents expressed satisfaction that the long-standing problem of dust, mud and road inconvenience faced during the earlier construction stages is finally nearing an end.
