Shillong, Aug 8: Opposition Congress legislator from Nongpoh, Mayral Born Syiem on Wednesday sought the intervention of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma into the pathetic condition of drains and footpath along the National Highway-6 at Nongpoh town in Ri-Bhoi district.

In a memorandum, Syiem urged the Chief Minister to look into the matter at the earliest especially the need to construct proper drains and to direct the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to fix this problem once and for all for the benefit of the general public.

He informed that several complains from the public were received on the pathetic condition of the drains and footpath in Nongpoh Town.

“It is a fact that during rainy season, the whole Nongpoh town flooded and there is water logging everywhere. This is due to the pathetic condition and ill-equipped drains and footpath along the NH-6. This issue is not new, I have also raised this in Assembly as well as with the NHAI official but till now there was no response,” Syiem said.

The Nongpoh MLA also urged the chief minister to consider speeding up the construction of the over bridge at Nongpoh for safety of students and pedestrians while crossing from one side to another of the busy national highway.

Syiem further requested the state government to upgrade the 53 kilometers single lane road Nongpoh-Umden-Umtrai-Topatoli to a double lane road. According to him, the road at present is in deplorable condition causing unnecessary traffic jams.

In his letter, Syiem requested the Chief Minister to look into the matter for upgrading the said road to double lane road through the Bharat Mala Scheme or any other central sponsored schemes.
