Shillong, June 18: The Department of Tourism & Travel Management and the Department of Music at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) jointly organized a unique two-day workshop titled “Storytelling in Tourism and Music: Bridging Culture, Emotion, and Experience through Theatre” on June 17–18, 2025, at the university’s Nongrah campus.

The workshop aimed to equip students with creative storytelling and theatrical techniques—skills increasingly recognized as vital in the fields of tourism and music. Emphasizing cultural sensitivity, emotional intelligence, and effective communication, the sessions encouraged students to view storytelling as a powerful medium for professional and personal growth.

Renowned theatre artist Mrs. Lapdiang Syiem facilitated the workshop, sharing her distinct approach to storytelling grounded in Khasi folklore. Through interactive exercises and improvisational activities, students explored the use of body movement, memory, and spatial awareness in performance. They also learned about technical theatre elements, including lighting, props, and set design.

The participants comprised second-semester students from the Bachelor of Tourism and Travel Management (BTTM) program and the Master of Arts in Music, creating a space for interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.

The workshop culminated in a series of student-led performances and a compelling theatrical piece by Mrs. Syiem, centered on the legend of Ka Nohkalikai. The performance, accompanied by Mr. Apkyrmen Tangsong on traditional instruments, deeply moved the audience and highlighted the emotional depth that storytelling can bring to cultural narratives.

Through this enriching initiative, MLCU continues its commitment to holistic education by promoting creativity, cross-disciplinary understanding, and cultural preservation. The workshop not only honed the students’ artistic skills but also empowered them to connect more meaningfully with diverse audiences, whether as musicians, storytellers, or tourism professionals.
