Shillong, July 29: The body of Assembly Speaker, late Dr Donkupar Roy Dkhar will be taken to Sohra after a prayer service at the Crinoline View Bungalow on Tuesday evening.
The prayer service will held at the Speaker’s official residence at Crinoline View Bungalow at 1pm.
At 2pm, his mortal remains will be taken to Sohra.
The state funeral will be also held at Sohra on Wednesday at 12.30pm. Thereafter, the body will be taken to Shella at 3pm for the last rites.
Dr Donkupar passed away at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi on Sunday. His body reached Guwahati airport on Monday and the casket was taken in an army truck to Shillong.
At the Speaker’s official residence at Crinoline View Bungalow here, the body reached around 12.30pm. People thronged to receive the casket and pay tributes and respect to the veteran political leader, who has also served the state as Chief Minister from March 19, 2008 to March 19, 2009 and as Leader of Opposition from 2013 to 2018. He was elected to the post of Speaker on March 12, 2018.
Governor, Tathagata Roy, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who accompanied the body from New Delhi, Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, ministers, legislators and other political leaders paid their tributes at the residence.
Various political parties and organisations also held condolence meetings in on Monday after the body reached the the state capital.
The United Democratic Party (UDP), HSPDP, NPP, Congress and other parties conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family while expressing grief over the demise of the veteran MLA from Shella.
Dr Donkupar was elected for the first time as Independent from Shella constituency in 1988 and continued to hold the seat for the seventh consecutive term.
