Shillong May 17: The opposition Congress in Meghalaya will organize a protest here on Friday against the decision of Karnataka Governor, Vajubhai R. Vala who invited the BJP to form the government by rejecting the Congress-JD(S) combine despite having the requisite number.
The protest will start at 11.30am at Congress Bhavan here.
Sources in the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) said that the party will submit a petition to the President, Ram Nath Govind through the Governor, Ganga Prasad pleading him to save democracy.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, B.S. Yeddyurappa was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Thursday for the third time after the Governor invited the BJP to form the government since it emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats.
The Congress-JD(S) combine has a total of 116 MLAs which is more than the halfway mark of 112.
The Congress was of the view that if the BJP in Karnataka was invited to form the government on the ground that it is the single largest party, then the Congress in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya should be also invited to form the government.
A three-judge bench of Justice A.K. Sikri, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice SA Bobde, did not dismiss the petition filed by the Congress and JD(S) fixed the hearing on Friday at 10:30 am.
