Shillong, July 25, 2025: In a significant move to enforce Meghalaya’s plastic ban, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), under the leadership of Dr. G.H. Chyrmang, MFS, Member Secretary, has seized more than 20 metric tons of illegal non-biodegradable plastic from across the state.

The large-scale seizure follows a series of coordinated raids conducted in collaboration with multiple departments of the state government. Despite a clear mandate to use only biodegradable plastic, authorities have reported persistent violations, with many vendors and distributors continuing to circulate non-compliant materials.

“Our mission is to transform Meghalaya into a plastic-free state. We appeal to all citizens and stakeholders to join hands with us in this effort,” said Dr. Chyrmang while addressing the media.

He further disclosed that the majority of the confiscated plastic items were not manufactured within Meghalaya but were transported from other states, bypassing existing environmental regulations.

The MSPCB has reiterated its directive to all shops, street vendors, and distribution centers to strictly use only certified biodegradable plastic. Dr. Chyrmang warned that the crackdown will intensify in the coming days, and violations will be dealt with firmly.

The Board has also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal plastic distribution to the authorities, reinforcing the collective responsibility toward building a cleaner, greener Meghalaya.
