Shillong, Oct 2: Former minister, Martle N. Mukhim is going all out in educating the electorates of Mawkynrew constituency to denounce the use of money during elections.
The issue was also discussed between Mukhim and his supporters who had not supported him in the earlier elections, but now decided to come back and support him in the upcoming Assembly election.
The discussion was held at Lad Kharang near Jongksha, where Mukhim’s old supporters from different areas of Mawkynrew constituency attended the gathering.
During the interactions, speakers expressed concern over the use of money in elections, and urged the electorates to be cautious, because the constituency should elect a representative who can raise voice for the people in the State Assembly, not those people who joined politics for the sake of “doing business.”
They also recalled Mukhim’s contributions to the constituency when he was the MLA of the erstwhile Dienglieng constituency which has now been re-named as Mawkynrew constituency. Mukhim had represented Dienglieng constituency for 20 years as MLA besides member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
Mukhim, who is the candidate of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) said that he was so annoyed and hurt to hear people from outside leveling the electorates of Mawkynrew Constituency with that of cattle and pig’s head, since there were candidates who used money for buying the electorates.
He however stressed the need to enlighten the people about the ill effects of money and the need to exercise the right to franchise with conscience by electing the right people to represent the constituency.
Following threadbare discussion, the meeting resolved to form a special committee, with Mukhim as the convener along with Markan R. Lyngdoh and Salwin Nongspung. The committee will further meet and consult people in different areas of the constituency to enlighten them about the need to elect the right people to represent the constituency.
