Shillong, Feb 16: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has accused the state government of allowing a “well-scripted modus operandi” of illegal coal mining, storage, and transportation, which he said led to the recent deadly blast at Mynsngat–Thangsko in East Jaintia Hills.
The former Chief Minister alleged that the explosion was a fallout of systemic illegalities that were allowed to continue unchecked.
“An illegality of this scale cannot take place unless there is a complicity between the authorities and the perpetrators,” Sangma said, demanding stern action against those responsible.
Seeks Judicial Intervention
Appealing to the judiciary to take cognizance of the matter, Sangma called for every instance of alleged illegality — including the coal mine blast — to be segregated and separately tried in court to ensure an independent inquiry.
“Justice delayed is justice denied,” he said, expressing hope that the court would intervene and put a halt to what he described as ongoing illegal practices.
Sangma also questioned the government’s approach, alleging that it was attempting to club multiple instances of illegal mining into a single process, thereby delaying justice. He warned that such delays were depriving the state of scarce resources and contributing to environmental degradation.
Cites Katakey Committee Report
The Opposition leader referred to the 35th interim report of the Justice Katakey Committee, which he claimed highlighted the scale of illegal coal mining activities in the state.
“If you want to put an end to this illegality, this government has to go,” he asserted.
He further stated that he may advise the PIL petitioner to withdraw the case or approach the Supreme Court of India over what he termed as the government’s handling of the issue.
Sangma informed that he is also moving a resolution against illegal coal mining in the Assembly, despite the matter being sub judice.
Urging immediate corrective measures, he said, “It is time for the government to say enough is enough and take the bull by its horn.”
