Shillong, Nov 4: The National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025, calling it anti-farmer, anti-consumer, and anti-employee.
The Committee announced that it will stage a massive nationwide protest in New Delhi on January 30, 2026, in opposition to the proposed Bill and what it described as moves toward large-scale privatization of the power sector.
In a meeting held in Mumbai on November 3, NCCOEEE resolved that if the Central Government does not respond to their demands, 2.7 million electricity employees and engineers across India will begin a nationwide agitation.
As part of the mobilisation strategy, NCCOEEE will hold state-level conventions throughout November, December, and January to prepare workers and engineers for the upcoming “Delhi Chalo” protest.
Committee leaders alleged that the Amendment Bill seeks to privatize the entire energy sector, which they claim would significantly increase electricity tariffs, making power unaffordable for farmers and common consumers.
They further argued that the Bill would allow private companies to use government-owned power networks for a nominal fee while leaving the cost of maintenance and financial burden with state-run utilities. This, they said, would push government power companies toward bankruptcy and undermine the rights of states in the electricity sector—violating the federal principles of the Constitution.
