Shillong, Apr 3: The NCP which is part of the six-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government will support the National People’s Party (NPP) in the upcoming Ampati Assembly bypoll.

The NPP is yet to announce its candidate for Ampati.

NCP state president, Saleng A. Sangma said, “We have decided to support the NPP by not fielding any candidate in the bye-election to Ampati seat.”

Saleng also expressed confidence that the NCP candidate, Krenilla Marak will win the Assembly poll to Williamnagar seat to be held on April 27.

He said that partners of the MDA would not be in a position to support the NCP candidate since all their candidates have also filed their nominations earlier.

The election to Williamnagar seat was countermanded after the killing of NCP candidate, Jonathone N. Sangma.

The NCP is fielding Krenilla, the wife of late Jonathone as the candidate.

Altogether, nine candidates are in the fray.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India is yet to announce the schedule for the bye-election to Ampati constituency in South West Garo Hills district.

The seat is lying vacant after former chief minister Mukul Sangma resigned as MLA of the constituency last month after he was also elected as MLA of Songsak constituency. Mukul had won six consecutive times from Ampati constituency.

Mukul’s eldest daughter, Miani D Shira is likely to be the Congress candidate in the bye-election.
