Shillong, August 29, 2025: The Department of Ophthalmology, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Friday to update eye specialists on the latest developments in ophthalmology. The event, titled “Updates in Ophthalmology”, was held at Vivanta, Shillong.
The programme drew ophthalmologists, resident doctors, postgraduate students and optometrists from Shillong, Nongpoh and neighbouring regions. The sessions were led by Prof. (Dr.) Tanie Natung, Head of Ophthalmology at NEIGRIHMS, who urged participants to keep pace with evolving practices and emphasised the need to share surgical skills and clinical knowledge for the benefit of patients in the region.
The CME featured lectures and case presentations on modern surgical techniques for strabismus and cataract, along with recent advancements in ophthalmic drugs and drug delivery systems. Among the speakers were Dr. Batriti Wallang and Dr. Wakaru Shullai of Mehra-Ki Eyecare, Dr. Hiranmoyee Das of Nazareth Hospital, and Prof. Natung. Doctors from Civil Hospital Shillong and Nongpoh, Bansara Eye Care, the Army and Assam Rifles hospitals, and private practitioners also attended the sessions.
Prof. (Dr.) Nalin Mehta, Director of NEIGRIHMS, attended as Chief Guest and lauded the initiative of the department. He encouraged participants to embrace lifelong learning in the fast-changing field of ophthalmology and assured that NEIGRIHMS would extend its expertise to support training and capacity-building for eye care professionals across the North East.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Benjamin Nongrum, Additional Professor of Ophthalmology, NEIGRIHMS.
