Shillong, Dec 10: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called for the observance of a “Black Day” across all seven northeastern states on December 11 to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.
In a statement, NESO reminded citizens that on December 11, 2019, the Government of India passed the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha despite widespread and sustained protests by indigenous communities across the region. The organisation described the CAA as a “draconian law” and reiterated that the day would forever remain a symbol of political injustice inflicted on the people of the Northeast.
NESO said that as part of its annual observation, black flags and black banners will be displayed at key locations across all northeastern states on December 11, 2025. The gesture, it said, is meant to send a strong message to the Centre that the people of the region remain firmly opposed to the CAA.
The statement added that the observance also serves to remind present and future generations of the discrimination and disregard shown by the Government of India toward the rights and sentiments of the indigenous population of the Northeast.
Appealing for widespread public participation, NESO urged people across the region to support the Black Day observance and continue standing up for their rights. “This is a just cause and a God-given right,” the organisation stated.
