Shillong, August 18: The issue of illegal migration in the North East resurfaced strongly on Monday as the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) staged a peaceful sit-in demonstration in front of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly at Khyndai Lad, Shillong.
The protest comes in the wake of Assam’s recent eviction drive against illegal settlers, which, according to the organisations, has led to an influx of displaced persons into Meghalaya. Student leaders expressed grave concern that the unchecked inflow of migrants poses a significant threat to the indigenous populations across the region.
Addressing the media, NESO President Samuel Jyrwa criticised what he termed the “delay and inaction” of both the State and Central Governments. “What is the future of our indigenous communities if our land continues to turn into a haven for illegal settlers?” he asked, urging strict enforcement of existing laws and stronger protective measures for indigenous rights.
Protesters displayed placards carrying messages such as “Evict All Migrants from the North East,” “Implement Strict Laws,” and “Protect Indigenous Rights.” NESO and KSU leaders stated that these slogans reflect the deepening concerns of local communities who feel increasingly marginalised by migration pressures.
While the demonstration remained peaceful, the student bodies warned of intensified agitation if concrete steps are not taken by both the State Government and the Centre. “We will not remain silent spectators. If governments continue to ignore this issue, larger movements will follow,” the organisations declared.
The demand adds to the long-running political and social debate in the North East over migration, identity, and the protection of indigenous rights.
