Shillong, August 20, 2025: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has ordered the imposition of a night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh border in view of security concerns and possible cross-border infiltration.
The curfew, enforced under Section 163 of the BNSS, will remain in effect from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM within a one-kilometre radius of the Zero Line. It will be effective immediately and continue for a period of two months.
The order prohibits movement of people attempting to cross the international boundary or sneak into Indian territory. It also restricts unauthorised gatherings of five or more persons, carrying of arms or objects that could be used as weapons, and smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, tea leaves, and other items.
Authorities said the measure was necessary in light of the current situation in Bangladesh, which has raised concerns over infiltration attempts by unwanted elements, members of proscribed militant outfits, and organised crime groups.
The District Magistrate noted that certain stretches of the border in East Khasi Hills remain porous and vulnerable to illegal migration and insurgent activities, which could disturb peace and security in the region if not checked.
