Shillong, Aug 20: Deployment of security will continue though curfew has been lifted totally from the whole Shillong city including Motphran and Them ïew Mawlong area.
All these days, night curfew was imposed in the whole Shillong city for five hours from 12 midnight to 5 am including in areas within Lumdiengjri Police Station.
“Curfew has been totally lifted from Monday midnight,†East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, P.S. Dkhar said.
Dkhar said that the curfew was lifted after the law and order situation has improved.
Though curfew was imposed in Shillong city since June 1 following a violent protest at Motphran area on May 31 night, however the imposition of night curfew for five hours in the whole of Shillong began on June 29 from 12 midnight to 5 am.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis N.R. Marak said that deployment of security will continue in certain pockets of the city including Motphran and Them ïew Mawlong to ensure that law and order is maintained.
On May 31 night, a violent protest broke out at Motphran area after an incident at Them ïew Mawlong on May 31 morning, where an exchange of words took place between a bus driver and a lady residing at the commercial area over the parking of a bus at Them ïew Mawlong
The protest started after the alleged assault of a bus driver and two other persons by some men at Them ïew Mawlong.
This led to the demand to immediately shift settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
The Meghalaya government has also constituted a high-level committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong to examine all records and documents on the issue.
The committee will also recommend feasible solution to solve to the pending issue of shifting the settlers from Them Ãew Mawlong.
