Shillong May 29: The Meghalaya police are working on some leads in connection with the murder of a nurse from Manipur, Leiyaton Soro, who worked at Nazareth Hospital in Shillong.

Leiyaton went missing since May 26, and the body was recovered on Tuesday at Ryndang Briew, near Umiam viewpoint, on the Shillong-Guwahati highway.

According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis N.R. Marak, said on Wednesday that police are working on some leads in connection with the case.

The postmortem was conducted on Wednesday after which the body was handed over to the relatives who then took the body to Manipur.

Organizations from Manipur and Nagaland that are based in Shillong which include the Naga Students Union, Thangkhul Students Union, Naga Elders Forum and Thangkul Catholic Community, Shillong has urged Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma to direct the law enforcing agency to speed up the investigation and book the culprit as per law.

The organizations condemned the incident and said that perpetrators should be brought to book immediately.

The Civil Society Women’s Organisation also condemned the murder of Leiyaton and said that protection of women and children is a priority of any government.

“Finding the murderers and booking the perpetrators of crimes against women and children is a must so that it sends out a signal that the law will catch up fast. Such cases should not be taken lightly as this gives a boost to perpetrators who feel they can just get away with murder or crimes against women and children,” said CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing in a statement.

The CSWO also urged the public to cooperate and help the police with any leads in the murder of the nurse.

“Together we can rid society of evil-doers and perpetrators of atrocities against women and children,” Kharshiing said while conveying sincere condolences to the bereaved family members.
